Where to find out drugs and medications

Most of these are American sites. Many drugs are sold under a different brand name in America, so searching on the Australian name won't work on an American site. Instead you will need to use the generic name. (The generic name is usually in brackets under the brand name on the label of your pill packet.)

Australian Prescription Products Guide - requires free registration.

myDr.com's Drug Search using the Australian MIMS database (and Aussie brand names).  A useful feature is that you can search on the name of a disorder to find commonly prescribed drugs.

Answers to questions about personal importation of medicines from overseas, from the Australian Government's Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

Drug InfoNet - the usual information plus more, including FAQs.

Fibromyalgia: Medications for FM on this website and Medication Information at the Fibromyalgia Community site.

Internet Mental Health is a good source of information on the psychiatric medications we are often prescribed.

MEDLINE plus Drug information at the National Library of Medicine in the USA. "A guide to more than 9,000 prescription and over-the-counter medications."

MedicineNet.com has a "drug interaction tool" where you can search on the medications you take (or wish to take) to see if the combination is safe.

Narcolepsy medications: Stanford; Holistic Online; Sleep Foundation.

Pain medication info from About.com's chronic pain pages.

Chronic pain and related medicines from painlinks.org. A useful page of links.

RxList - "the internet drug index" - database searchable by generic or (USA) proprietary trade names. Gives extensive information (contraindications, adverse reactions, and much more) for free. Also alternative medicines.
